    December 23, 2019 /  Dogs and Cats

    I’ve been compiling a list of famous cats for my website PetNum.com for some time now. I know which my favorites are, but I wondered which are the most famous overall. There are so many great famous cats that I’m doing this in four groups, and then I’ll do a final round with the top cats from those groups.

    The most famous cats (based on online chatter) with names starting with the letter N to Sc are:

    10. Polar Bear, who was the cat in Cleveland Amory’s book “The Cat Who Came for Christmas”

    9. Paulie, from the Non Sequitur comic strip

    8. Patsy, who was Charles Lindbergh’s cat

    7. Orlando the Marmalade Cat, from the series of books by Kathleen Hale

    6. Periwinkle, from the TV series Blue’s Clues

    5. Oscar, the Hospice cat from Rhode Island who can seemingly predict death

    4. Samurai Cat, from the illustrated books by Mark Rogers

    3. Salem from the Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV Series and comic books

    2. Sabbath, from Emily the Strange

    …and the most famous cat on this list is…

    1. Scratchy, from “Itchy and Scratchy” a cartoon within the animated series the Simpsons

    Cats not ranking in the top 10 were Nee chee from Emily the Strange, Nala from the House of Night book series, Napster who was Shown Fanning’s cat, Robert Johnson from Rick Riordan’s Tres Navarre series, Pyewacket from the 1958 movie Bell Book and Candle, Pulcinella who was composer Domenico Scarlatti’s cat, Piccolo who was Albert Schweitzer’s cat, and Peta who was the British Chief Mouser in the 1970s.

    So a nice mix of cats from television (Scratchy, Salem, Periwinkle) and books (Sabbath, Samurai Cat, Polar Bear, Orlando).

    I compiled this list by searching for the names listed on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online.

  • Cat Vitamins Can Help Prevent Felv And Fiv In Cats

    Comments Off on Cat Vitamins Can Help Prevent Felv And Fiv In Cats
    December 22, 2019 /  Dogs and Cats

    Can cat vitamins really help prevent FeLV and FIV in cats? Feline Leukemia Virus or FeLV is contagious and is passed by direct cat-to- cat contact, such as in mutual grooming or bite wounds. Not all cats who contact it die from the disease. Some fight it off and recover and some become carriers of the virus. FeLV suppresses a cat’s immune system, allowing other diseases to make the cat extremely sick. It can also cause lymphatic cancer. A small number of cats contract FeLV and never get sick, living a normal life span. This is because their immune system fights off the active infection. A good vitamin for cats containing vitamins, minerals and super-foods will keep your cat’s immune system in tip-top shape. Infection is much less likely to occur when the immune system is supported and functioning well.

    It is so very vital for a cat’s health that he gets daily vitamins. Supplements of cat vitamins and minerals keep the immune system strong and this will (1) prevent cats from becoming infected because they fight off the disease (2) keep carriers of the virus healthy and finally (3) help cats with active cat FeLV to boost their immune system, stay healthy and not get a fatal illness or cancer.

    FIV or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus does not usually progress to the same kind of debilitating life-threatening condition as happens with human AIDS. It’s commonly transmitted through cat fights, resulting in a bite wound. So you see FIV more often in stray cats. Some cats get it and just fight it off, without your knowing they were ever infected. If your kitten tests positive for FIV you should retest again for the second test will often be normal. Make sure you get him on a powerfully healthy supplement right away. Cats can beat FIV infection and if they do remain positive a good supplement keeps them healthier for a longer time. The most important kind of supplement is a complete supplement. Many times, a cat owner goes right for immune boosting products but forgets to give a complete and balanced supplement.

    Once again, it’s just so important to supplement your cat with healthy cat vitamins and minerals to help him resist getting Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS. It’s easy to forget how important it is to give the cells in our cats’ bodies all the tools they need to fight disease.

    December 19, 2019 /  Dogs and Cats

    What is dog’s Cushing’s disease? Dogs Cushing’s disease is a common problem that affects senior pets, and is caused by overactive adrenal glands. This condition can easily be confused with premature signs of aging in dogs. Cushing’s disease symptoms include:*

    * weight gain
    * hair loss
    * urinating in the house
    * increased consumption of water
    * increased urination
    * increase in appetite

    Thankfully, this disease is treatable and once treated your dog can live a much longer and healthier life. This condition can be treated at home using homeopathic remedies.

    In dogs, Cushing’s disease can look like the debilitating effects of aging, so some pet owners may mistakenly consider euthanasia in order to let their pets go peacefully. It is very important to understand when your dog is truly just aging or if they are suffering from Cushing’s disease. Your vet can help you determine what your pet is facing.

    In dogs, Cushing’s disease is usually found in pets that are around ten years old. Cushing’s disease is more likely to strike in miniature dogs and in spayed/neutered dogs. Since it can strike just about any dog and there are very few known predispositions for the disease it is sometimes hard to diagnose. Even the physical signs of the disease can be similar to a variety of other health problems.

    Because the symptoms are so much like aging it is important to note the symptoms that are more than common signs of aging. These can be extreme drinking(water) as 80-85% of Cushing’s dogs will drink 2-10 times their normal amount. Another possible sign is a change in the color of your dog’s coat, 85-100% of Cushing’s dogs have a change in the skin or coat. 90-95% of dogs will also take on a pot-bellied appearance. By recognizing these signs you can treat the disease and make your dog live longer and more comfortably. Once you suspect the problem, a simple blood test could prove that your dog is suffering from Cushing’s.

    If Cushing’s disease is left to progress without treatment it can lead to even more serious problems such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, failure of the liver and kidneys, and other problems like infections in numerous places on the body. These problems combined with Cushing’s disease can prove fatal to your pet. So if you pet is exhibiting any of the symptoms for dog’s Cushing’s disease and they are over 6 years of age, it is best to take them to a vet right away for a diagnosis.

  • Why Do Cats Like To Scratch On Things

    Comments Off on Why Do Cats Like To Scratch On Things
    December 10, 2019 /  Dogs and Cats

    Scratching is a normal part of cat behavior and serves several functions, including conditioning of the claws, providing a means of stretching, and acting as a marker (both olfactory, or scent, and visual). Cats like to scratch! The act of scratching actually removes frayed and worn outer claws, exposing new, sharper ones.

    Cats tend to pick a small number of conspicuous objects in their environments to scratch such as trees, fence posts, the corner of the couch, etc. and return to them repeatedly. This is why the tree next door looks so scratched up and why your cat may find it difficulty to leave your couch alone. The scratched surface leaves a highly visible mark that can be easily seen by other cats. In addition, cats have scent glands in their paws so that when they make scratching movements they leave odor cues that the cats can smell. The fact that cats leave scent marks by making scratching movements may be the reason that cats will continue to try to scratch objects even after they have been declawed. Declawed cats may still be leaving scent marks on objects they scratch.

    In some cases, keeping the cat away from the area that is being damaged is the simplest solution to the problem. Another variation is to allow the cat to have access to whatever is being scratched inappropriately, but to make that area unattractive to the cat while making a more appropriate area more attractive. Many the couch because they simply do not have another option to exercise their scratching needs. All cats have a need to scratch and should be provided with appropriate posts to do so. Hopefully, your cat is not scratching but you are trying to pre-empt a problem.

    Cats dont understand physical punishment, so hitting me when you catch me scratching on your leather couch is not going to help. Cats like rough surfaces that they can shred to pieces well, you probably already knew that. The solution is to provide legal scratching toys and play with your cats on them so they understand it is ok to scratch there.

    Put your and toys in the main areas of traffic flow, where you hang out a lot of the time. Most cats wont make it to the back bedroom when they feel the urge to scratch. Pretend that youre scratching the surface, attack the surface, and encourage your cat to play with you. Its been proven you can actually train your cat to scratch in appropriate places. So start scratching with your cat.

    These pills are very popular and it is one of the most well known brands of heartworm tablets with most of the vets recommending these tablets for dogs, as they really guard the dogs from diseases.

    Many of the oral medicines which are given to pet dogs are either mixed with the dog food or are given to the pet in the form of a tonic, but Heartgard plus is available in a form which is relished by the dogs and the dogs love eating it. Heartgard plus is available in a chewable form and includes beef which is loved by most of the canines, except for some of them who are allergic to beef.

    Those pets who are not comfortable chewing the beef tablets, can chew the normal tablets.

    Heartgard tablets contain Ivermectin which is given to farm animals so as to protect them from parasites, and dogs positively respond to these tablets.

    However, the amount of Ivermectin present in the medicine is minimal, which means that it will only eliminate heartworm larvae. The heartgard pills prevents infection from attacking your canine and stops further multiplication of larvae.

    Heartgard plus cannot stop heartworms from entering your canine’s body, but it actually clears off the larvae which has already got accumulated in your canine’s blood.

    Heartgard plus medicines need to be taken by your canine, every month religiously and strictly, so that the larvae does not keep multiplying.

  • Dogs with Jobs – Bed Bug Detection Dogs

    Comments Off on Dogs with Jobs – Bed Bug Detection Dogs
    November 25, 2019 /  Dogs and Cats

    There is a group of working dogs known as detection dogs, and there are many specific types of detection specialties. With the frequency of travel within the United States and to foreign countries, there has been a noticeable increase in concerns over bed bugs. Along with this problem came the need to find ways of detecting bed bugs without the harmful use of widespread pesticides. Since detector dogs can pin-point scents it became increasingly popular to use dogs to detect not only live bed bugs but bed bugs in there developmental stages as well. This way any treatment of the problem could be narrowed to the exact area needing treatment rather than the widespread potentially harmful fumigation and pesticide.

    There is no special breed for bed bug detection. The best criteria is a happy dog who loves to work and hunt. The training is extensive and today these dogs are certified and usually are in the range of 98 percent accurate. Since their sniffing abilities are so keen, they can find hidden infestations and save time and money when it comes to treatment. More and more extermination companies are using this reliable resource to rid their customer’s problems.

    The training of these dogs usually involves hiding vials of bed bugs in various stages of development as well as their fecal matter, and having the dogs pick up the scents, alert their handlers and get rewarded. This is similar to how other types of detection dogs are trained. The dogs become very focused on “the hunt”.

    There has been a growth of new business opportunities in this specialty industry and mostly in North America. The need for this service ranges from residences to large hotels, and is serviced by private dog sniffing companies to partnering with extermination companies. Either way the dog doesn’t care about that – only about when the dog can get to work!

  • Dog Kennels and Cats Carriers Provide Security and Comfort for the Animals

    Comments Off on Dog Kennels and Cats Carriers Provide Security and Comfort for the Animals
    November 18, 2019 /  Dogs and Cats

    Pet lovers have a big responsibility in caring for them. Travelling with your cat can be a harrowing experience if the pet doesn’t have a shelter. This is why; cats’ carriers are essential. While at home too, these felines need a carrier with enough space and ventilation.

    Importance of Dog Crates

    A dog crate or kennel is indispensible for your pet; dogs feel secure in it and quickly learn that it is their own. Providing a protected environment for the dog is the owner’s responsibility. It is useful for travelling, training and comfortable living. Large dogs that are kept outdoors require well-built spacious kennels just like an outdoor cathouse for two or more cats. However, puppies need only small shelters so that they can have a cosy feeling. Without a crate, puppies may roam around the house when there is no one at home and hurt themselves. It can also be dangerous if they chew electrical wiring or eat poisonous plants. Keeping pups in kennels can solve this problem.

    Tackling Pup Anxiety

    Just like humans, animals too have anxiety issues; however, general apprehension is different from dog anxiety. Often, this occurs when the animal is separated from its earlier owner. It will take some time to get used to the new owner and during this period, separation anxiety is seen. Don’t pamper you pet during these times; ignore him for a while when he wants attention. Let your pet not see you when you leave for work; this way, he will not miss you. Teach him to wait for you; but, never be cruel to him. If you see your puppy crying at night, a stuffed toy or cuddly toys can help tackle his loneliness. Obedience training is actually a preventive measure. Using positive reinforcement techniques can prevent fear in dogs. You can also handle puppy anxiety by encouraging good behaviour and discouraging improper conduct.

    Duck and Chicken Homes

    A also called the hen pen is very important for these birds. This outdoor protected area helps the birds to roam around safely. They require fresh air and they need to forage for insects and worms. Pens provide enough room for poultry to move around; this is important because overcrowded hens get stressed easily and can even stop laying eggs. Ensure that you install the pen in an area where there is enough grass; otherwise, you will have to provide the feed. Duck homes are similar to chicken houses and are available online. However, if you have many ducks, then it is better to build a simple shelter that is predator-proof. However, these birds cannot be caged often. They have to be in water or run around within the pen.
